UPDATE: The Riverside County Sheriff’s office Sergeant Mike Manning released the following update on February 24, 2014.
“The victim in the Pechanga shooting has been identified as 49-year-old Los Angeles resident ,Keith Rodman. The suspect has been identified as 32-year-old Wildomar resident, Maria Vihanek.” Manning said.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s office, Vihanek is currently in the custody of the Riverside Sheriff’s Department and is being medically treated for a self-inflicted injury, prior to being formally booked into a Riverside County detention facility for murder. “The Riverside Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit determined that the victim and suspect were involved in a dating relationship and had a 6-month-old baby together. The baby was present in the hotel room during the shooting; however, was uninjured.” Manning stated in his report.
Just before 11 p.m., Friday, February 21, 2014, a man was shot in the guest room at Pechanga Resort Casino, and later succumbed to injuries at Temecula Valley Hospital early Saturday morning.
Riverside County Sheriff, Sergeant Mike Manning, expanded on the police report, saying, “Further investigation revealed that the shooting occurred in a guest room and that the victim entered the lobby of the casino to seek emergency medical treatment immediately thereafter.”
Deputies arrived on scene at 11 p.m. and found a male in the lobby of the resort in need of medical attention. The male was transported to Temecula Valley Hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries at 12:32 a.m, according to the Coroner’s report.
Additionally, a female, associated with the male victim, was located in a guest room at the resort suffering from non-life-threatening injuries, according to the report filed by the Riverside County Sheriff’s office.
In a statement by Pechanga Resort Casino, Public Information Officer Ciara Green stated, “We at Pechanga Resort and Casino are deeply saddened by this domestic incident that occurred in a hotel room. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the individuals involved in this unfortunate, isolated incident.”
As to the safety of the Resort at Pechanga, Green stated, “Our first and foremost obligation is to the safety of our guests. The investigation is in the hands of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office and we are doing everything possible to assist them with those efforts.”
According to Pechanga Resort and Casino, all hotel guests whose stay was impacted by the incident and subsequent investigation were accommodated following the incident.
On the identity of the victims, Sergeant Raymond Husky stated that both the victims’ identities are being withheld pending confirmation. “No suspects are outstanding and all involved parties are known.” Husky stated. “Investigators from the Southwest Sheriff’s Station and the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation.”
