Zachary Andreco Lim wins Lake Elsinore Unified Spelling Bee, First Runner Up Valerie Gutierrez

LAKE ELSINORE—Zachary Andreco Lim, a fourth grader at Cottonwood Canyon Elementary, is LEUSD’s 2014 Gordon Keifer Memorial Spelling Bee champion! Zachary (pictured left) claimed first place after eight elimination rounds by correctly spelling the word melancholy.

First runner up is Valerie Gutierrez, a fifth grader at Rice Canyon Elementary School, who stood with Zachary for two rounds until thwarted by the word ubiquitous.

Over 35 student finalists and first runners up grades 4 through 8, representing 18 district schools, participated in the district wide tournament.

As district champion, Zachary will next compete in the Riverside County Spelling Bee in March. In the event he is unable to compete, first runner up Valerie Gutierrez would serve as the District’s alternate.

Dr. Alain Guevara, Asst. Superintendent, Instructional Support Services, was the Spelling Master.
