The nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year, according to a recent press release.

Currently, 6 exchange high school students are already slated to attend schools in the Temecula and Murrieta area.  “We have some students arriving next week, and we still need host families.” Stated Johanna Lack, International Exchange Coordinator for the EF Foundation in Temecula.  Though host families are not paid, families gain much from the experience of aiding students from other countries.

“Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school.” said Lack. “Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community.”

Host families undergo screening processes, ensuring that they are well suited for the experience of hosting an exchange student. There must be one adult in the house hold of at least 25 years-of-age in order to qualify.

Each EF Foundation host family represents the diversity of American culture. Through varied economic, religious and social backgrounds.

“Those best suited for the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe.” Said Lack. “In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children, or whose children are grown, and are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world.”

Host families work with a local  coordinator, such as Lack, who serves as a liaison with the EF Foundation. This coordinator is responsible for matching the right students with the right host families, enrolling them in high school, and providing all involved with ongoing guidance and support throughout the year-long exchange experience.
